In multiple public surveys, Albertans have made it clear they don’t want political parties in municipal elections. But the provincial government doesn’t seem to care – they are pushing ahead with legislation to introduce municipal political parties anyway. It’s critical for us to clearly state our opposition.

Cities function best when councils can have open dialogues, engage with community members, and be flexible and creative with problem solving. Introducing political parties to municipal politics in Calgary would exclude important perspectives from City Council that do not fit party ideologies. That would be really bad!

It’s critical that community members see their elected representatives as open conduits for conversation rather than partisan supporters parroting party lines. Party allegiances would create massive barriers for municipal politics because many community members would feel disconnected from their Councillors due to partisan differences.

That’s why it’s so important for us to let our MLAs know that we want the provincial government to retract their municipal political party legislation. If thousands of us email our MLAs, we can keep Calgary free from party politics.

Together, let’s tell our MLAs that we don’t want or need municipal political parties. We’ve already drafted the email for you, so all you have to do is fill out the form and hit send!
